2024

Transforming ERCOT Client Experience Through Improved Accessibility

In 2024, we partnered with The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) to completely rebuild their mobile application.

The existing app had become outdated in technology and design, leading to reliability issues during peak usage times when users need it most.

ERCOT's mobile platform had technical limitations: separate codebases created inconsistencies, the app performed poorly during critical times, and outdated UI failed accessibility standards. Limited analytics prevented understanding user behavior.

My Role as Accessibility Lead Designer

As lead designer, I directed the visual redesign of ERCOT's mobile app, conducted UX audits, developed the design system, and created responsive interfaces. I balanced information density with accessibility and prototyped user flows for emergencies.

Impact

The revamped ERCOT app features 65% faster load times and 99.9% uptime during peak usage. User engagement increased by 40%, with session durations tripling.

The app meets WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards and includes new features like personalized alerts, interactive outage maps, and energy-saving tips, all developed through a cross-platform approach.

Key Learnings

This project highlighted the importance of optimizing performance in emergency information systems and how effective information architecture enhances access to crucial information.

The ERCOT app rebuild demonstrates how strategic design thinking can transform a simple tool into an essential public service during challenging times.
